In 1998, the Zuyd University in Heerlen introduced a new teaching method for the physiotherapist training - Problem-Based Learning (PBL).

German education institutions realize a common vocational training with double qualification based on this new and forward looking instruction methodology in cooperation with the Zuyd University, Heerlen (near Aachen) and the Präha Group, Kerpen (near Cologne).

Besides the outpatient practices, sports and rehabilitation institutions, the clinics as well as the educational institutes where physiotherapists are employed today, academically trained physiotherapists will be presented a lot of chances, especially regarding a senior position and/or scientific working in the fields of employment mentioned above. Senior positions in professional associations, health insurance schemes and the industry are further perspectives of professional activities. This is the only degree that gives physiotherapists the chance to work on an international basis.

In countries like Australia and New Zealand the patients have been able to consult the physiotherapist for a long time. Since the 1st January 2006 it has become also possible in the Netherlands to consult a physiotherapist without referrals from a physician. This development of the profession in the Netherlands is new and nearly unknown in Germany.
